Children’s Summer Reading 2018

Summer Reading Program 2018
June 23 – August 18

There are two ways to sign up:

1. Stop by the library to sign up and receive a paper reading log to keep track of your reading.
2. Sign up online and keep track of your reading electronically.

Make sure you visit the library once a week to get a prize. Prizes will be changed weekly.

This program is for children entering K – 6th grade. If your child is not yet in Kindergarten they can enter our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. For tweens and teens in 7th – 12th grade, check out the Teen Summer Reading Club.

WEEKLY PROGRAMS

Summer Stories

Mondays at 10:30am
Birth to Six Years Old

Children birth to 6 years old are invited to join Ms. Michele every Monday morning at 10:30am for story time fun!There will be books, songs, rhymes, movement activities and more. This program will help teach children a love of learning and will offer parents/caregivers early literacy tips to use at home. There will a craft and playgroup immediately following the story time.

Violin Lessons – FULL

Mondays & Wednesdays
1:30pm – 3:00pm
4th to 9th graders

The New London Community Orchestra is pleased to offer free violin lessons at the library! Lessons will be 30 minute long and held every Monday & Wednesday (you must commit to both days). Lessons will start June 25 and run through July 25. Free violins will be provided for students. This program is full.

 Movie & Munchies

Wednesdays at 1:00pm
Children of all ages

Families with children of all ages are invited to join us every Wednesday at 1:00pm for a family friendly movie! All movies are rated G or PG and lunch for kids will be provided. This Summer we are showing movies based on books! Make sure to check out the book from the library before or after watching the film.  Free lunch will be provided for children age 18 and younger and  is limited to the first 15 children. Families are invited to bring in their own lunch or snacks. Parents are required to stay in the room with their child.

 Rock ‘n’ Read

Fridays at 1:30pm
Children of all ages

Children of all ages can join us every Friday for a rocking activity. Every week there will be something different. You can look forward to music, games, crafts and more!

Summer Meals

Monday – Friday
1:00pm – 1:30pm
Children 18 and younger

Children 18 and younger can visit the library every Monday – Friday between 1:00pm and 1:30pm to get a free, nutritious meal. All meals are provided by End Hunger Connecticut. The meals will be served and must be eaten in the Children’s Room. On Wednesdays the meals will be served in the Community Room during Movie & Munchies.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Creative Movements with ECB

Thursday, August 9 at 10:30am
Children 3 to 5 years old

The Eastern Connecticut Ballet is hosting a monthly Creative Movement program for children 3 to 5 years old. This 45 minute program is an introduction to creative movement. During class we will listen to a story and then do 35 minutes of movement around the theme. Children must sign up for this program, space is limited. To register call the Children’s Room at (860)447-1411 x 4.

 Tech Tuesday

Tuesday, August 7 at 1:30pm
3rd to 6th graders

Children in 3rd to 6th grade are invited to a special technology program. Each month we will explore something different. Space is limited, registration is required. You can register for the program here or by calling the Children’s Room at (860)447-1411 x 4.

SATURDAY FAMILY PROGRAMS

African Drumming with Felicia Hurley

Saturday, August 11 at 10:30am

Come attend a free, hands-on African drumming workshop for children and their adults! Felicia Hurley will provide an array of djembes and supplemental African and Latin percussion instruments. You will be introduced to the instruments, taught some djembe patterns and then use those patterns to from memorable polyrthyms. Come experience the calming effects of drumming in this fun, interactive workshop for the whole family.
